The Spinner (2014)

This project is an exploration of femininity, gender, and fertility. I combine traditional processes that have long been associated with feminine craft while using my body as a material source through knitting with my arms instead of knitting needles. Through the socio-normatives of gender versus biological sex alongside my own experiences as a woman, I create a map of my fears. Every row a different anxiety and fear of my gender, body and fertility through spoken words. The movement of my hands create shifts and unexpected knots, becoming topographical marks. Gender, body image and expectations of my role as a woman from the deep south become woven in the by the spoken word as well as the language of knitting.
